Clarity Beats Comprehensiveness

I was reviewing a project at HFCL Limited last week. Two managers submitted updates for the same project.

One report: 8 pages, full of charts, metrics, and acronyms. The other: 1 page, 3 bullet points.

Guess which one got approved in 2 minutes?

The short one. Because clarity beats comprehensiveness.

The 8-page report had everything. The 1-page report had what mattered.

In 25+ years across Nokia, Ericsson, Samsung Electronics, and HFCL Limited, I’ve learned:

Senior leaders don’t have time for complexity. They need:

  • The decision that needs to be made
  • The options (2-3 max)
  • Your recommendation

That’s it.

Junior professionals over-explain to prove competence. Senior professionals simplify to enable decisions.

Your job isn’t to show how much you know. Your job is to make it easy for others to act.
